The Northern Apennines River Basin District was identified by Legislative Decree n. 152/2006, in accordance with the requirements set out in Directive 2000/60/CE.

Law n. 221 of 2015 modified the territory of the district, which comprises, nowadays, the Ligurian basins, the Magra basin, the Arno basin, the Serchio basin and all Tuscan basins from Carrione to Albegna whereas the Fiora basin and the Marche basins are now part of the Central Apennines River Basin District; the Romagna basins, formerly comprised in its territory, were assigned to the Po River Basin District.

The territory of the Northern Apennines River Basin District includes three regions: Tuscany, Liguria and, marginally, Umbria and numerous municipal administrations. Below are the administrations that fall within the district’s territory:
